ice cream, rain & reptiles

June 24, 2014

No. Today we didn’t celebrate a birthday with ice cream which would indeed normally indicate ice cream for breakfast. We did, however, attend a field trip at Bruster’s at 11:00 a.m. FUN!

Katie’s favorite part was seeing how they make the waffle cones. “They would make a paper-thin waffle. While it was still hot, they’d take it out of the waffle iron and wrap it around a metal pointed cone and then place it inside a shaper. Once it was cooled, you’d take it out and it’d be this nice, firm waffle cone with no hole in the bottom. I liked it because I always thought it was folded by hand. It was cool to see how they actually do it.”

Michael’s comments on the field trip. “There were four different steps to making an ice cream cake. They showed us the first two steps. I thought it was cool because I thought there was only one step. You have to freeze it three times before you decorate it. They looked good!”

There’s over a 100 recipes in this magic Bruster’s recipe book. Katie was enamored. The owner let us smell the mint concentrate. Katie pegged it well. “It smells like a liquid candy cane.” He mentioned that one time he got a drop on his finger and tasted it. It was enough to keep him from ever eating mint ice cream again. HA!

Did you know that they can make their daily ice cream in a specific, sequential order that might eliminate the need to clean the machine in between batches? Amazingly, once the ingredients are poured into the freezer, it only takes 8 minutes to freeze the ice cream. It comes out as a yummy, incredibly fresh soft-serve…the best ice cream ever!! (I love Clare’s expression in this photo. She was so excited to see the ice cream falling out of the machine into his bucket.)

Ellie was quite enamored with her little sample, but seriously couldn’t understand why she only got one bite. 🙂

She was quite happy when they handed her a cone of her own. Such a big girl!!

Clare is always in the center of things. She is always up close and personal in every field trip. She just might have snuck a lick when the ice cream was within reach.

I really love this group of kids.

A little red light, green light to finish out the morning.

As has become the custom in Georgia lately, summertime rain storms are a daily occurrence. Hot and sunny at lunchtime, torrential downpour at 2:30. No lightening means, kids and umbrellas playing in the rain.

Thankfully the rain let up a bit, and we were able to get to the library for their reptile show. I’ve never been so thankful we were early as the room quickly filled with people and many, many were turned away. What an experience.

She was kissed by a lizard!

Then she held an albino Burmese python.

So did Michael! They tell me it felt squishy and textured like fabric.

Well it might have been a Monday, but there was some serious celebrating happening. Let’s hope it is indeed the start of a great week!
