Gotta love long weekends

May 27, 2014

The school year wrapped up nicely. Actually, to be fair, the kids have been “done” for many months now, but they have simply slipped seamlessly into next year’s curriculum. Nate & I have opted to include a bit of school throughout the summer. The kids will focus on mostly math and history (as we pay for that monthly) and then spend their enrichment time on a few websites for simple knowledge sake. We’ll continue to use wonderopolis.com and add Khan Academy.

But this weekend, there was no thought of school. Homemade beignets were on the menu for Saturday breakfast. YUM-MY!!

Katie loves to be in the kitchen and for me, there’s something really great about waking up to the sounds of kitchen goodness and sometimes even the wafting smell of some baked confection.

You gotta love anything with powdered sugar, right?!

Elizabeth opted to hijack Clare’s cereal instead of a hot beignet. It’s maddening that she climbs up into the chairs, but thankfully she’s becoming more adept at keeping her balance, both on her feet and while sitting.

After breakfast (and mom’s tutoring and a trip to the gym), yardwork was on the list. We pulled out dead bushes from the front, planted some summertime color in preparation for a little greater curb appeal and a more welcome front porch greeting too. More to come over the next week. The “babies” love to be outside, and Clare adores our neighbor in a special way. Washing the car was the perfect excuse to hang with her for a bit. Gotta love the magic of water and friends!!

Ellie even got to help Daddy. She was hilarious though. Picked up the sponge from the bucket and immediately started washing her hair. I guess it just goes to show how we use the washcloth in the bathtub. Funny, right?! Thankfully, the neighbor uses only dish soap in her car washing. It wasn’t too toxic and surprisingly didn’t burn her eyes either. Amazing!

Katie got the chance to go through our teenage neighbor’s hand-me-downs and thankfully scored a good bit of clothing. Clare brought a stuffed animal for Elizabeth. Too precious!! I love that Clare takes the time to think of Ellie and often brings her goodies.

Sunday was a day of pool fun with the family. Aunt Jen & Julius, Aunt Anna and Grana came out for the day, before we headed to a BBQ with friends. What a great day! Unfortunately, sweet Katie learned a hard lesson AGAIN. She simply can’t catch a break when it comes to the penetrating sun’s rays on her oh so fair skin. Yep. She’ll learn there’s just no escaping the effects of poor sunscreen applications. Thank God for newly acquired knowledge about essential oils. Lavender came to the rescue throughout the night and she woke up drastically healed and noticeably less red. Praise God!

Monday brought another trip to the pool with friends and a delicious BBQ at our house. We love the leisurely feel of summertime. There’s just something great about friends and memories. Their oldest was reminiscing (via an online app) that we had shared this holiday last year. I love it.

The yard is starting to come alive with some color. Our friends who had us over for dinner and outdoor play gifted me a rose from her garden. This afternoon, Nate noticed our rose had bloomed and gifted me with one from our yard. I love it! What a gift to have them side-by-side on our table today. Oh how wonderful they smell!

I’ve been working on a little project this afternoon that I hope to finish this week. I’ll try to blog more on this little project. It’s actually one I’d done many years ago but needed updating and a little waterproofing improvement too. More to come hopefully.

Just to close with a little Memorial Day tribute. Thank you to all our service men and women. We are blessed to benefit from your sacrifice and that of your family. A special thank you to our grandparents and my cousins and Uncle Nick also. Blessings to all today. May we continue to protect our freedoms as Americans…the freedoms that built this country!
