Springtime pastel experimentation

May 2, 2014

So…I have seriously been in the mood to do some fun creative projects. I think its a sign that it is spring, the babies are in a good place, and I feel like I have my feet under me a bit more lately. I’ve missed our leisure moments of big-kid creating. It feels good to be around the table mid-afternoon.

We prepped our canvas with a design out of glue and let it dry overnight. Then today, we used oil pastels to color the drawing with complementary colors. We tried to use colors that would blend well together keeping in mind a cool and warm palette.

You can see how roughly we laid down the colors. The canvas gave us an opportunity to color only on the surface, not worrying about laying down a heavy color.

We then used a tiny bit of baby oil to smooth and blend the colors. I was surprised by how well this process worked, It was really cool to see the colors change and have some control over how much you blended. Michael preferred working with a cotton ball, but Katie and I exercised a bit more patience and control with our Qtip. I would advise you use a high quality product. Our craft worthy tips were really not durable enough for this project, but we powered through none-the-less.

I think they turned our great.

Look how different they are in both color and design. We did experiment with wiping the canvas lightly with a wet wipe to clean the glue of the color. It gave it a different look, but it did mute the other colors also, not just those on the glue itself. At any rate, be very careful not to use an excess of baby oil. It will not absorb on its own. Pastels require you to seal them with a fixative. I’ll update if I find the oil and the fixative don’t go well together. Otherwise, I’m hopeful this project is a success from start to finish.
