Don’t “Be Yourself”

May 26, 2013

What a beautiful day. I had the privilege and honor to sit among incredible people at today’s Pinecrest Academy commencement exercises. We are in Georgia because of Pinecrest and a job offer to teach KG upon my own college graduation. It is this school and the beautiful souls surrounding me this morning that have shaped me into the wife, mom, homeschooling teacher and tutor I am today. I am forever blessed.

It started with these two incredible women of God. Not only were they instrumental in getting me to say yes to moving to Georgia and beginning my career at their “new” school, but they continue to teach me so much about faithfulness and love. I’m forever grateful for them! Thanks Arlene and Judy!

Dr. Peter Kreeft gave today’s commencement speech and what a beautiful tribute to our faith and the conviction required of the faithful in today’s world. I hope to get a copy of it in order to continue digesting it over the next several weeks. It was so philosophically inspiring. Imagine, right? Such a renowed professor and writer giving a speech with incredible Catholic and timeless depth? Who would have ever thought?

I was at today’s graduation by invitation of this beautiful graduate from my second year teaching. She has grown to be an incredible woman with what will surely be a strong future ahead of her. The University of Kentucky is getting a fantastic young woman.

Nikki’s family has meant a lot to me over the years. Her older sister, a former KG student of mine as well, and their youngest sibling, Allie, a playmate of Katie’s in their younger year,s have been in and out of our life for the last 13 years. As a teacher, Nate and I were guests in their home many times, a caretaker for Allie after Katie was born, a Confirmation sponsor to Carrie, and of course even despite being less visible, always a cheerleader and supporter in prayer. Katie still talk about her memories of playdates and summertime days with Allie. What a day to remember so many fond moments together both in and out of the KG classroom. God bless all three of you!

I was so honored to have received an invite from Annie as well and to celebrate later at her open house. Sweet Annie stole my heart in the first weeks of school so many years ago and today gave the most incredible Valedictorian speech I’ve ever heard. She started in PreK at the school and graduated today with such honors. I was so overjoyed to see her stand up there and deliver an incredibly heartfelt and well-spoken message. She is clearly no longer a shy 5-year-old! I can’t wait to hear of the great things you will do as you venture forth from the Paladin walls. Music Therapy will surely never be the same! Good luck at Furman and congratulations!

To Rafael and Nicholas who I didn’t see, congratulations as well! I applauded you from the seats!

As Dr. Kreeft said, now is not the time to “be yourself”. Be what Christ wants you to be; virtuous, self-sacrificing, generous, courageous in the face of opposition, full of conviction and integrity and always striving for holiness. Don’t do it according to the world’s disordered standards, but to those that you know to be true, the ones you have lived in your time at Pinecrest. God bless each of you, including my former students celebrating in other places today. I’m proud of you!
