Happy Groundhog Day!!

February 2, 2013

Happy Groundhog Day. Did you see the video of Punxsutawney Phil and his shadow? Check it out HERE.

Many weeks ago, the kids were flipping through the latest Family Fun issue and requested this snack.

The funny thing was even gathering all the ingredients, the kids hadn’t quite figured out what we were creating. It makes me happy when I can pull off a surprise that they concocted themselves.

Here are our little Phil’s. Oh were they yummy as a pre-lunch snack. Afterall, there wasn’t time to enjoy them after lunch with the traditional Groundhog Day festivities.

Groundhog day festivities, you say? Yep. For three years running we have been spectators at this quirky, free, family fun afternoon. It’s the 35th Annual Groundhog Day Jugglers Festival.

It’s one of Nate’s greatest delights in these winter months before spring. There’s something so wonderful for me that it’s tradition, we know what to expect, we love every minute of it, and each year it is just a little different than the year before.

This crazy, kooky, fantastically wonderful adult band opens every show. In fact, they have opened every show these past 35 years. Craziness!

You truly have to experience the Feed & Seed Marching Abominable Band to appreciate the wonder that are these red & yellow costumed adults. There isn’t a

The cheerleaders are quite the entertainers dancing throughout the crowd. Their costumes speak volumes about their own personality and bring a certain flair unequal to any cheerleaders I’ve encountered. Anna joined us this year and deemed them, “dubutantes from hell”.

I think Anna just might break out her clarinet skills from junior high school and done some fantastically crazy red & yellow to join them next year at this event. We might be lucky enough to jam with them again at the St. Patrick’s Day parade. We’ll see if this family of a newborn makes it the parade this year…two more weeks until delivery!
Twelve acts comprise the afternoon’s juggling entertainment. It’s fun to see returning faces (although you can only compete for a total of three years) and the prizes are a groundhog trophy with absolutely no meaning. It’s fun.

This kid was amazing! He is juggling with a toy that Nate purchased several years ago. Everyone loves it. It’s a Chinese Diablo Yo-Yo and quite fun! There are some incredibly amazing tricks you can do with this little juggling toy. Every year, Nate & the kids get just a little bit more inspired to pull it out and practice. It’s a great garage toy in the colder months of the year. No flying things in the house!! Check out this video.

Such silliness.

Afterwards, there is a big playtime in the courtyard. There’s unicycles, and pogo sticks, and all sorts of juggling. It’s great because everyone shares and teaches one another. Clare was determined to jump on the pogo stick. However, Katie garnered much more attention. In fact, she wants me to mention that the juggling pro took the time to talk to us in the parking lot about her pogo talents and cool looking pogo stick.

This year, the kids purchased a Kendama. Apparently, we are a little behind-the-times in our knowledge of this Japanese toy and it’s growing popularity here in the US. I like that the ball is attached and can’t roll away or fly into anything unexpectedly. I also like that it’s small enough to keep in my purse for a very active 6 year old who just sometimes needs something other than a book to keep his attention.

What a great day! I’m glad for our traditions. I’m glad that I opted not to stay home and nap this afternoon. Traditions are good! Very good!

Happy Groundhog Day!

As an aside, Uncle Andy leaves tomorrow after spending the week with us. However, we found out tonight, he’ll be back the end of February for business again. This time his travels take him to Nashville, but it’s only 5 hours from us…still much closer than Denver to Atlanta! He’ll actually get to meet one of our babes before they turn a year old!

Uncle Andy has a special bond with Michael…both being the only boy in the family of girls. He knows Michael recently acquired a few Skylanders over Christmas! He had the foresight to bring with him a backpack of his own Skylanders figures as visiting guests to Michael’s game play. What a game! It makes me happy that Michael loves it, and that it’s a special treat too to play longer with an uncle he adores…everyone adores!! Love you bro! See you in a few weeks!

Katie spent last night at her second American Heritage Girls lock-in. She loves this troop and I’m thrilled she has so many great influences! She did a great job (and surprised us) by reading at Mass this morning. What a perfect way to end an AHG event…the graces of the Eucharist!

We sent the kids to bed early…well on time at least. It’s the first time this week! Homeschooling and a treasured guest…why not break the bedtime rules?! I’m heading to bed myself to let Nate, Andy & Anna watch the last Bourne movie. Too much for me tonight. I’m an action movie wuss for sure. Sleep is a commodity these days. I don’t need to feed no-sleep tendencies with an elevated blood pressure. Good night all!
