Thankful for a little more festivity

December 15, 2012

Sweet Michael has been down all week, getting his antibiotic on Wednesday, and still quite sluggish, we have found a little more of our routine returning. He even made it in front of the computer to do his online lessons…the ones he likes the most!

I’m thankful to be out of bed, still not 100%, but at least able to maintain some sense of mommy responsibility. I’ve gotten laundry done and put away (for the most part) and sat to do a few Christmas preparations. Funny the things you take for granted…like how necessary stomach muscles are for supporting an ever growing pregnant belly. With the incessant coughing, I’ve pulled those very valuable muscles making even standing difficult. Come to find out, gravity is indeed a powerful force. Hence, I’ve found lots of things to do sitting down.

I did make it into the kitchen this week for some baking. I must admit, it’s therapeutic for me. For the first time, Clare received her own spoon for a little brownie batter goodness. Runny nose and all, she didn’t complain. These are some seriously fantastic Buckeye Brownies. Thanks to Pinterest for the recipe!

Although, in hindsight, we probably should have avoided our early-week outing to Chick-fil-a family night, it was nice to get out and a treat for Katie who has been homebound for so many days with everyone around her sick.

So…you really can’t convince this girl to do anything she doesn’t want to do. It makes me laugh as this is how she has spent most of her week…crying! She is so out of sorts being sick herself and then those around her not following any sense of normal routine. Sweet girl is going to have to learn the art of flexibility.

And our week has ended differently than we’d planned, but in God’s goodness, it’s been fun! I had intended to spend Friday finishing my Christmas shopping and then enjoying some luxurious, quiet, alone time at a hotel that night. Nate has his company party this weekend at a nearby hotel and offered to rent one of the rooms if I wanted to have some time away. Gladly, especially after these last three weeks of chaos! As it worked out, Katie & Michael’s sleepover plans fell through and without another good option, they got to join me for a little staycation. As luck would have it, the hotel has a pool. Although the cable programming is terrible, it’s been a nice getaway and convenient for Nate…he doesn’t have to drive home at midnight after the party.

Nate enjoyed this year’s Casino Night party with a few of his co-workers. Unfortunately, not everyone from his department was able to partake in the festivities, but as luck would have it, all of them but Nate were here for the first time…all new employees in the last year.

Although you can’t see Michael’s face, this was the first time all week we have seen him smile. Thank you God for the opportunity. I’m especially thankful to have this time with the big kids (Clare is with her godparents overnight). With the tragedy in CT, it’s not hard to realize how much having your kids close is a gift. I’m so thankful (mostly everyday) that they are home schooling as a family. It’s so nice to see them interact and learn such valuable life things…how to get along, study diligently, do your daily chores, have some time for fun and leisure all the while sharing it together. God bless those families directly suffering from the horrors of this latest school shooting. I’m sad that there are individuals who suffer so much they are brought to kill another. I’m also sad that it’s become a political springboard for gun control. The real issue should be how to bring God back into the schools and family life thereby giving people an avenue for hope and strength in grace, not take guns away from ALL people. God bless our country and God bless our own families.

I’m off to take the kids to the pool one more time while Nate gets us some breakfast, and then we’re off to retrieve Clare. I must admit that I miss my little sidekick! It’s so strange not to have her underfoot or attached to my hip. I pray she’s had a great time and her Godparents have enjoyed the happier sides of Clare’s dynamic personality! Then we are off to the Atlanta History Center for their Christmas Spirit program. It should be a great day!

Merry Christmas to all. Tomorrow we’ll actually get our tree put up and as luck would have it, it’s also the third Sunday of Advent so we’ll turn on all our Christmas lights also.
