Just a little (or a lot) of homeschooling success…

October 10, 2012

I think when you are teaching or at a job outside of the house the “pats on the back” come a little more regularly and are likely much more obvious. However, when you are a SAHM and homeschooling at that, the “atta boys” aren’t likely to be heard from anyone but momma’s voice to the kids. Therefore, I’ve come to see the accomplishments of being a teacher to my children, in different ways than when I was in the classroom. Now, they come in the smiles as one of my children finally “gets it” or comes to a new realization unrelated to the topic directly at hand. Sometimes they come in a good test score or a conference with one of their online teachers, but today, today I saw it clearly for what it was…well done mom. Well done. Together, you and your son have accomplished something great!

For some reason, maybe it was being pregnant with Clare or simply low on patience for any number of reasons, but teaching Michael to read was quite painful. It seemed it took him forever to recognize a repeated word in text as something he didn’t have to stumble over every time he encountered it. It also seemed like his attitude was one of “I can’t do this” or even worse “I don’t want to do this”. It was such a struggle. Nate and I would often have to tag out just so we wouldn’t lose our minds completely. I do remember many times threatening him with a consequence…”pay attention to what you are reading or ????” Yes. Not one of our better moments, but honestly quite real in the life of schooling at home.

However, TODAY…today is the day I have waited for. Although Michael is a great reader (reading beyond 3rd grade at age 5), he is not a confident reader. Every new reading level is a struggle to convince him he’s capable. I’ve put off introducing true chapter books as I knew it was going to be a battle, and one I just wasn’t ready to have every day. “I can’t do it. I don’t want to do it.” was sure to be a constant mantra. However, inspiration struck (and a bit of a you-don’t-have-a-choice too) and I simply asked him to go upstairs and pick one of the chapter books that I had moved from Katie’s closet into his closet sometime last week. He whined and stomped his feet and procrastinated and I reminded him I was fond of consequences if he continued. Thankfully, he chose to go find a book. Not only did he find the book, but he actually found it was quite easy to read and even more that he ENJOYED reading it. Oh yes, we have arrived…finally! Michael is a reader who has read for me everyday this week with some sense of enjoyment. Maybe mysteries are his “thing”. We’ll see. For now, I’m happy and I’m patting myself (just a bit) on the back for a job well done. He CAN read!

I love you sweet boy!!
