Countdown to Halloween

October 10, 2012

I can’t say we ever “countdown” to anything but Christmas. However, Kiki & Company made it so very easy that I simply couldn’t resist. I printed my poster through Sam’s Club for less than $5. Using a coupon from Michael’s, I bought the self-adhesive foam board for $1. I love that the activities are fun, but cost little to nothing to do. It’s been fun already and we are only on day 10.

Today the kids bobbed for apples. They’d never done it despite all the fall festivals we feel we have attended over the years. I suppose there is some “spreading germs” reason why this isn’t a standard activity anymore. It was fun!

Clare heard all the laughter and had to check it out. Actually, she’s always game for a reason to climb onto the table. Who could resist this front row seat?!

“What are you cheering about?”, ponders Clare. Two rounds and Katie is declared the winner. Sweet Mikey couldn’t do anything but laugh! (Not sure his mouth was actually big enough for these apples. He didn’t seem to mind.)

Yesterday, it was all about the caramel apples. Katie has a protective coating over her back molars (put on when she turned 6). She is quite careful not to chew anything that might pull them off. I appreciate that our girl is a rule follower. However, today was an exception. She tried hard to chew it with her front teeth, but I did give permission for an occasional molar assistance. Both kids were quite pleased with their morning snack! They’ve had so many years of my “let’s decorate” something with food coloring/sprinkles/candy that they gather supplies and make their choices without much mommy input. I love these moments of independence and growth from them.

We’ve also wrapped mummies (thanks to Pinterest) and displayed them near the front door to give to any visitors who might stop by this month. Hint. Hint. Anyone want to come visit?

Kids always love their free monthly Lego build at the North Point mall Lego store. This month…a black cat was the perfect start to this October countdown. (After purchasing a new radiator on the van that morning and spending an even $666, I was thankful there were no ladders to walk under at the mall entrance.)

Thanks to my sister’s help, and the kids’ desire to decorate, the house is “finished” and ready for Halloween.

And thanks to felt being $1.99/yard last week, Anna and the kids and I quickly designed, cut, glued together, and hung our spooky bats from the front porch. (Tutorial HERE if you are interested.)
