Kansas…our final days

September 30, 2012

I can’t believe how quickly these 9 days seemed to fly by. Today, we left Grandma Hazel’s for KC and then on to St. Louis for our final trek.

We took a little detour on our way to Kansas City to stop at Manhattan for some reminiscing and shopping. The kids have become fond of the hype surrounding certain KState games, and yet were unfamiliar with the actual school. Nate and the kids stopped at the stadium so the kids could say, “I’ve been there” and game days were among Nate’s favorite times at KState.

In walking the campus, Nate was able to show them his dorm…Haymaker Hall. He also took them in the library. I don’t recall ever being there, but I’m told it’s pretty impressive.

We were also lucky enough to score some $1 and $5 Tshirts to take home. Of course, here in Atlanta, we are in the land of the SEC. We simply had to bring a little KState home with us.

After leaving Manhattan and driving to Kansas City, we had just enough time to meet up with my cousin, Gunner and aunt Sherry for some frozen yogurt. Thank you Sherry Ruth for treating and Gunner for wrestling with Michael! We love you both and it was great to see you, even if just for a short minute!

A quick dinner at Kirk & Jill’s as the kids were so excited to get to the fall festival. What a fun evening! It was easy to justify an extremely late bedtime. There were hay rides (Lexi clearly loved this!), bounce houses, sand candy art (Oh my who knew you could now eat your sand creations?), and the coolest glitter tattoos (Yes, they are indeed still on 4 days later and after 3 showers). The crowds were so manageable it was easy to let the kids run freely between the bounce houses and have 4 adult eyes on them (even in the dark).

Michael and Luke had an especially fantastic time. Sweet boys cried Saturday in having to say goodbye and then again on Sunday missing one another. Hoping Skype provides some great long-distance camaraderie moments for them. Every trip we say how great it would be to live close to one another. Hopefully the promise of year-round warmer weather will bring them further south! We can dream, right?!

Magic House in St. Louis was not on our original itinerary but after learning they had just opened the Lego exhibit, we simply HAD to stop. We were blessed to be able to meet the creator of these great exhibits. What tremendous creativity and inspiration!

Michael (and Katie) were happy to see his creations, but Michael was more excited to head upstairs and create his own things. He started by making the letter “E” and then wondered what else to make. I suggested he make his name. Oh my. He did so great creating the letters. Daddy helped with the letter “M”. Thank God because mommy wasn’t very creative in figuring it out.

Katie Girl was more excited to solve her mysteries. It was providential that she got the opportunity to work through this mystery as she missed her final Forensics class. She would have solved a “real” crime had she been there. Success sweet girl. You solved this one! You are a great detective!

The kids love Magic House. I’m continually amazed by how they never outgrow the delight of pretend play. Katie was scurrying around with ice cream cones from the street vendor and managerial roles at the grocery store and of course some time in the library and the hospital nursery too. Michael preferred the magnetic fishing and the pizza cafe. Clare loved climbing the tree house via a ladder. That girl loves to climb!

Okay, so there you have it. Our vacation is over and we had a fantastic time! It was relaxing, fun, and filled with so much family and memories. I appreciate the photos to remind us, but I’m so thankful we shared the moments together! Now, it’s back to real life and all that it holds. Hopefully I’ll find some time to blog our Halloween preparations. I’m so excited for the kids to open their countdown windows and for us to share some fun fall/Halloween preparations together.

You can see the idea HERE. I’m even more excited that we most of the activities cost nothing or very little to achieve.
