September is almost a blur

September 18, 2012

Okay, so no more excuses. I’m back in the full swing of life (for the moment at least). School is well underway and running on a normal routine now, Clare has adjusted to everyone’s schedule and lack of entertaining ability, I’m no longer sick on the couch or asleep in bed and happily enjoying this baby’s 17 weeks of gestation. I can’t believe Oct. 8th we’ll finally (hopefully that is) have a gender and can begin debating and praying over the baby’s name. Gosh!!

So…what have we been doing in this month that finally feels somewhat normal?

School began mid-August and sweet Clare has struggled to find HER place in this new routine. Actually, I am quite delighted that she is content to color (and not scream) while we are doing our religion lesson. It seems she is better adjusted after that first “class” of the day. This year I’m focusing more on the Church feasts and saint days in our lessons.

Katie has completed 5 weeks of her Forensics science classes. She is so excited to be taught by real scientists! She’s “geeked out” learning about DNA and extracting it from a strawberry, taking finger prints and this next week will learn how to lift them, and of course spotting tracks in nature and learning to cast footprints. Unfortunately, she’ll miss the culminating class of this session…using her learned skills to uncover the culprit behind a fictitious crime by analyzing the crime scene set up on site. October/November’s class will be on Amusement Park physics. I think she’s going to love it!

They were lucky enough to have the opportunity to stray from their forensics lessons for a brief bit during one class and talk about rescuing a baby squirrel. One of the scientists has a permit to rehabilitate wild animals, particularly squirrels. Katie tells me they have to be fed every 2 hours, bathed religiously so they will be stimulated to go to the bathroom, and kept warm either in your hands or by a heating pad. Unfortunately, she tells me that the squirrel died last week, but what a cool learning opportunity.

September has also brought a break in the hot temperatures. We even found Daddy on top of the rock wall. He confessed later that had he had a rock wall growing up, he’d never come down. He loves them even now! He takes great joy in the fact that Clare loves to climb!

Clare finally got her first haircut. She’s needed it for several months, but the thought of getting her to sit still and making the trek down to Jen’s salon was more than I wanted to tackle. However, the time had come. She did great actually…thanks to Jen’s ever ready cell phone apps and movies. The best part…when Jenny blew the stray hairs off her face and neck. Oh how she laughed!! Thanks sis for being part of yet another FIRST in our kids’ life.

Clare would live outside if we’d let her. I stood in the garage while she played in the rain. What smart momma (watching her third child) would have it any other way. Gotta love our pre-hurricane rains.

We also made it to Callaway Garden for our annual Labor Day outing. We love it there, and labor day presents some extra fun events…triathalon, hot air balloons, pancake/sausage breakfast, and games on the beach. We had a great day and were lucky enough to share it with my sis and nephew (I’ll have to find those pictures and upload them – sorry sis). This year, we were able to take advantage of a reciprocal membership and get in free! Sweet. Gotta love it when things like that work out in already scheduled plans.

Now, we are off to Kansas for a 10 day adventure. I promise to try and blog while we are there or shortly after returning. It’s going to be a whirlwind and I have a lot to do before we leave. Thankfully, we are going to take a few days school vacation…not bringing all the books on this trip!
