Great Bend, Kansas

December 7, 2011

We often tell the kids that Kansas has the best sunsets. I think it’s true. (This was actually taken our last night in Kansas as we drove to Kansas City before returning to Atlanta.)

Prairie Sunsets

Grandma Hazel’s is the last bit of childhood memories that still can be relived. My parents and every other grandparent has moved from our childhood locations…so Grandma’s is where we reminisce. We remember things like visiting the Great Bend zoo…free by the way!

Where peacocks roam freely (and this generation eats out of your hand). As a child, I used to stare at them just hoping to see their feathers spread wide. It was a really great trip to the zoo if we happened to find one of their feathers on the ground. This trip, we just fed them. (They are less scary than the ducks and geese!)

And you can feed the zillions of koi that live under the dock and slowly begin to surface as more food is thrown their way. However, the ducks have now claimed it as their territory. I’m not sure how much food the fish actually receive!

At Christmas, the zoo (and Veteran’s park on the other side of town) is lit with tons of lights and “sculptures”. It really is pretty amazing for a small little Kansas town.

Grandma’s house means there is a gas station just beyond the driveway…well within walking distance. They just happen to have the most amazing Dr. Pepper and Pepsi frozen slushes. It is an almost daily treat for everyone…Grandma included!

The first Sunday of Advent was celebrated at Grandma’s and a church I remember attending as a child, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Yep. We celebrated the first Sunday of the New Mass in Kansas. (I spent a portion of it in the lobby walking a sleep baby.) First Sunday also means the kids get this year’s ornaments. Michael always receives a cartoon, Katie a gold die cut image, and Clare will receive something silver. (That is, once it is purchased.) My momma started this tradition with us, and we loved it. I especially loved it when I went to decorate our first tree!

Grandma won’t be coming to Atlanta for the winter this year. That meant that I spent a few days in the kitchen (with the kids) preparing some freezer meals for her.

In fact, we filled her freezer with main dishes, sides, and a few sweet treats too! I was thankful for the kitchen help and very happy to know to that she will be fed when the snow and ice arrives and she’s stuck inside. We enjoyed a particularly long afternoon by watching Christmas movies on Katie’s new Nook Tablet.
