Honeymoon is over

July 29, 2011

Our sweet Clare has entered the pattern of the other previous two Boster babes…acid reflux!

She has always had a certain love to be squished and held securely against your body. The Swaddle Pod was a great solution to sound sleeping when she got too strong for a simple blanket swaddle to hold her hands against her chest (or more commonly up against her chin). Her daddy was the best blanket swaddler, and yet she’d wake up to eat flailing her hands everywhere. Although, the swaddle pod genuinely makes this mommy grimace in its likeness to a straight-jacket, our girl LOVES her cocoon.

However, this week all things have changed. What was an occasional reflux problem, has now shown its ugly head. Having treated both siblings with Zantac, I was happy to fill the prescription and begin treatment at the first sign of distress. However, as I read the side-effects, this momma’s heart was less inclined to treat with previous remedies. Reaching out to friends and more seasoned mommies, I heard from some gripe water worked and for others Zantac was the saving grace. Zantac we gave. The girl…screamed as it went into her mouth, and screamed for hours thereafter. She was so unsettled. Tummy grumbling. Voice strained. Legs drawn up. Grunts escaping from her throat. Two days we endured until we reached the limit last night.

A google search convinced me Colic Calm was the route to go. Thankfully, CVS is less than a mile from the house. Nate has deemed it “Octopus Ink”, but LittleBug doesn’t mind. She even sucked it right from the syringe. As we await the Zantac to leave her system, I’m hopeful this will ease some of her discomfort. It’s so hard to see your child lose her true personality due to pain and lack of sleep. God bless the inventors of this “ink” if it does indeed live up to some of its claims. God willing, we can report to the pediatrician next week that we’ve found something better than his zantac. She has slept somewhat peacefully all morning! I appreciate the quiet and peace knowing she’s happier. I will gladly recite my Hail Mary’s without the soundtrack of infant crying. Here’s to hoping and praying for longevity in this current moment.
