Honoring our sweet girl’s life – Today she’s seven.

October 4, 2010

Oh my goodness. Today she is SEVEN. Seven years ago we had no idea how completely this girl would change our lives. She entered the world with such drama and has not let us down once!  Our girl is a fighter. At 4 pounds 11 ounces, she was a fighter. This girl slept in NICU for 8 days as we longed to bring her home.  Our hearts ached to be a family, to snuggle her without someone watching, to do instead of asking permission, to be her caregivers and her parents, and to know that we were a family in our own home. At only 4 lbs. 9 oz, she came home and our lives would never be the same. Her voice has remained a significant part of our days ever since.

She was so tiny! Our orders were to feed her and to love her, and hopefully she’d put on some weight. Overwhelmed, we did what we knew….love this sweet little girl that didn’t really fit in our arms she was so tiny. Little or not though, she was home. We were a family!

Those first few months, are a bit of a blur, but I know they were nothing like our life before she came. Our hearts grew.  We watched her every moment marveling at God’s goodness.

Who does she look like today? Look! She smiled in her sleep. Maybe she’s gotten just a little bit bigger. Is this colic? Oh no. This IS colic. Reflux? You mean this isn’t normal?

We were new parents just taking life as it came. Maybe I’m a bit biased, but we did pretty well. We learned a bit along way. We learned a few things about parenting, about medicine, about sleep, about each other, but more importantly we knew firsthand there was nothing greater than the gift of children. As Nate would say, “We were smitten.”

We’ve celebrated each birthday with grand pomp and circumstance. Afterall, life is meant to be celebrated. Why not REALLY celebrate the day God chose to change this world? You are a part of  the grand plan sweet girl. You are a part of this wonderful cosmic universe created by the most incredible God, and you have a distinct purpose written on your soul. It’s a purpose unique to you and that will shape those around you. We are lucky to be part of it. Happy Birthday Katie Girl! We love you!

Happy 1st Birthday!

Happy 2nd Birthday!

Happy 3rd Birthday!

Happy 4th Birthday!

Happy 5th Birthday!

Happy 6th Birthday!

Happy 7th Birthday sweet girl!

We love you so much Katie Girl. There are so many things you have come to teach us over the years, but one of the greatest parenting joys is watching you grow up, witnessing your personality take shape, seeing your love for the things around you blossom, and for grace to radiate concretely from your heart. You have the most incredible sense of right and wrong, and look at everything with a precise and keen sense of understanding. You are a voracious reader and a budding artist. You are the best big sister, a loving daughter, and a generous child of God. You work hard and strive to always do your best. We are honored to watch you grow. We are blessed to be your parents. We are thankful to share your love as it makes our hearts bigger. We’re proud of you sweet girl. Enjoy your celebrations. You deserve every bit of them! Happy SEVENTH birthday!
