Day 226/365 – American Girl doll dreams

August 15, 2010

A dream has come true.

Katie has been debating for months whether or not she should spend her money on an American Girl doll (realizing that they were quite expensive) or if she should just find something different. Tonight’s original plan was for some friends to let her check out some books from their library and let her take home a doll on loan while she was reading about her. Great idea…see how she likes the doll before we encourage her to start investing.

Well, much to our surprise, the girls gifted her one of their American Girl Today dolls. Katie was so shocked and delighted. Our girl had the biggest smile on her face the rest of the night! Now she’s dreaming about visiting the boutique for her birthday after hearing tales from her friends. You mean there’s clothes and furniture and accessories and a whole store just a few minutes from our house? What have we gotten ourselves into now?!

What a special day!

We love you Jessica & Gianna. Katie will never forget tonight or the love she has for you girls. You mean a lot to her (Michael also). Thanks for being great role models and making her feel so special despite the age difference. She was already telling me before going to bed that whenever she gave her doll a hug, she’d be remembering you too! Thank you!!!

Katie's favorite American Girl character...so far.

Katie read this book last night and came down around 9:30 p.m. with tears in her eyes. Apparently, Kit had given her reason to be scared and remember only bad things that might cause her to have nightmares. Oh my. Really? In the American Girl doll books? Nightmares? Our Katie has such a tender heart and is so incredibly justice oriented. She’s sworn off this book forever!

Kit apparently jumped onto a boxcar, got caught, and was thrown in jail with a few other friends. In order to get help, she pretended to have to go to the bathroom and then snuck out the bathroom window to run home and get help. The story ended happily, but Katie couldn’t shake the fact that Kit had been in jail. I’m not certain if it was more that Kit had been thrown into jail or if it was that her “role model” had done something so bad that she was thrown into jail, and then made another bad decision to lie and sneak out the window.

I don’t think Katie will become a criminal defense attorney when she grows up.

What do you do when your 6 1/2 year old is so shook up over something so innocent? You allow her to snuggle in her daddy’s arms while watching one episode of Penguins of Madagascar and then fall asleep in our bed (to be moved when we went up later).  She has something good to remember, she felt loved and safe for a few minutes, and then snuggled in our soft, cozy bed. Ahhh….to be a kid again! I love this sweet girl!
