Day 173 – Tuesday ~ Flowers from our summertime yard

June 22, 2010

The new rose bush (one of them) has produced its first blooms. Unfortunately, the beetles got to it first, but oh does it still smell great! I can't wait for this bush to mature even more throughout the summer.

I can't neglect the family favorite, still producing so many blooms each week. These flowers are by far still the most fragrant I've ever smelled. LOVE THEM. Come visit and I promise to share.

Okay, so next year's project just might be the yard instead of the coveted flower beds I love so much more. Katie Girl loves her bouquets though...weeds or not.

The zinnias are my favorite to grow (easy and drought tolerant) AND they are finally starting to bloom. They come up from seed so great taking only about 4-6 weeks to reach maturity. They last a longtime as a cut flower and produce bigger plants the more you cut them. We hope to have many bouquets sprinkled throughout the house (and the neighbor's house too)

However, these dang Japanese beetles are devouring the biggest zinnia plants. Thankfully, Pike Nursery, had a great organic solution that seems to have killed off tonight's round of pests. Here's to hoping that we'll have a few days reprieve. Gotta love the collection of dragonflies though that have found their way to the garden. There are some really great ones (4 or 5 of them) that have transparent wings with a significant black stripe. Very cool!

Spraying for the beetles brought out all the little pests making their home in the garden. Michael was especially fascinated by this white spider. The bug houses have been well used already this season.

Nate has been such a trooper to climb through the brush to retrieve the still ripening black raspberries. The kids can only get to a few bushes, and with the stickers on the, they aren't overly anxious to climb too far down the hill or into the junipers. Tonight my beloved really loves me. It still had to be 100+ degrees at 8:00 p.m.

Tonight I love these black raspberries with a newfound love. My breakfast dinner and the addition of a bit of sugar and these fantastic wild berries was a bit of summertime joy I will gladly indulge every night. Yummy! Living in the south does have its benefits.
