Day 69 – Thursday

March 12, 2010

Hudson Flour Mill is only 30 minutes from Gma's. We were able to tour it this morning. VERY COOL!

We got to watch the flour bags filled with air, the flour measured and dumped in, the paper flaps folded, the conveyor belt package them together and stacked onto the wooden flats. Michael loved when the forklift carried the flat onto the rotating metal disc where the clear plastic wrap covered it for shipping. They ship daily….94% being shipped to the east (not southeast though, bummer). Their peak season is not harvest season (we all presumed as much), but starting at Labor Day and going through the Christmas holiday. Makes sense when you consider when the most flour is consumed. They ship it via semi trucks, but not before it goes through 7 sifting & grinding processes. We were able to bring home a great DVD too. So great for our Southern kids to experience the heart of bread basket country. What do you do when you leave the flour mill, you go to the store to see if they have delivered it yet, purchase several pounds and start planning what you are going to bake…Mennonite bread from the bread book yesterday.
